Is Wedding Up-Lighting Worth It? How It Transforms Your Venue and Photos

Up-lighting is one of those details couples don’t always think about until they see the difference. Done well, it changes how a room feels in person and how it looks in every photo. Here’s what up-lighting is, how it works, and when it’s worth it.

What is up-lighting?

Up-lighting means placing small lights on the floor that cast elegant columns of light up walls, pillars, trees or architectural features. Instead of a dark or flat background, the whole room glows in the color you choose.

Why it matters for your photos

Evening receptions get dark fast. Without lighting, the background in your photos can look dull or disappear entirely. Up-lighting adds depth behind you, so when you look back at your pictures, the room looks as beautiful as it felt.

Choosing your colors

  • Warm amber or soft white for a candle-lit feel
  • A color from your wedding palette to tie the décor together
  • Neutral tones that highlight your venue’s architecture, trees or building walls

Why I use battery-powered LED lights

Every light I use is a battery-powered LED, controlled wirelessly from the DJ booth. Each light can go exactly where it looks best, the setup stays clean and tidy, and it doesn’t rely on the venue’s power. LEDs also stay cool, so they’re safe near linens, florals and décor.

Wireless lights make outdoor weddings easy, too. For Becca and Eric’s estate wedding in Montecito, 20 wireless up-lights lit up the entire house, and at Kyle and Anna’s wedding in Arizona, 20 battery-powered lights transformed an outdoor venue.

Up-lighting vs. dance floor lighting

Up-lighting sets the mood for the whole room. Dance floor lighting adds movement and energy once the party starts. Most receptions benefit from both, and I bring both to every wedding.

Is it worth it?

If your reception is indoors or continues after sunset, up-lighting is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. If your celebration wraps up in daylight, you may not need it. Many DJs and lighting companies charge for it separately, so ask whether it’s included in your quote. In my all-inclusive package, full-room up-lighting and dance floor lighting are always included.
