Why a Wedding DJ Isn’t an Hourly Service

When couples compare quotes, it’s tempting to work out a wedding DJ hourly rate: divide the price by the hours on the day and land on something like “$500 an hour.” I get it. But a wedding DJ isn’t an hourly service. You’re investing in an outcome, and most of the work happens long before I ever arrive at your venue.

Most of the work happens before your wedding

Here’s what goes into your wedding before the first song plays:

  • Tailoring your timeline and coordinating with your planner, venue and other vendors.
  • Client meetings, with as many planning sessions as you need.
  • Extensive music prep and specialty edits, built into a custom set around your likes and dislikes.
  • Rehearsing names and spotlight moments so every introduction lands.
  • Venue visits, and designing sound and lighting for your space.
  • Equipment testing and preparing backup systems.
  • Packing hundreds of pounds of gear, then expertly setting it all up.

Then comes the wedding itself: a 12-hour day to deliver exactly what you envision. Count every hour that goes into your wedding, not just the ones your guests see, and “$500 an hour” stops making sense.

What you’re really paying for

The total package of a great DJ goes far beyond “just music and a few announcements for six hours.” It’s getting the obvious details right and the unspoken nuances too: the moments no one planned for, mentioned or even realized would matter. It’s handling unpredictable changes and stressful unknowns so seamlessly that they feel like they were always meant to happen. That takes intuition, empathy and real experience.

You’re paying for someone who cares about your day as much as you do and delivers on every promise. There are no redos for this day. I think about that every minute until I go home, so you can enjoy your wedding knowing every detail is under control.

Two skill sets, one DJ

There are lots of good “event manager” DJs who run a timeline well and make a good MC. There are lots of great club DJs who can creatively rock the biggest parties in the country. I bring those two skill sets together: the polish of an experienced event professional and the skills of a DJ who can creatively crush a dance floor with great mixing and song selection.

That’s also why two quotes for the same hours aren’t the same thing. Even with identical packages, a DJ’s style and skill decide whether your dance floor stays full.

What my package includes

My all-inclusive wedding package is $5,000 for 8 hours, covering your ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing, with sound, lighting and MC included and travel included in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties. I personally DJ every wedding I book. I’m with you for the entire planning process, not just the last two weeks. See every detail on my Pricing page.

Questions to ask any DJ you’re comparing

  • Will you personally DJ my wedding, or will it be someone from a roster?
  • How involved will you be during planning, and how easy is it to reach you?
  • Can I see live videos of you mixing at real weddings, not just a highlight reel?
  • What does the price include: ceremony sound, cocktail hour, lighting, overtime?
  • What backup equipment do you bring?
