Spotify Playlist vs. a Real Wedding DJ: What a Playlist Can’t Do

Wedding DJ vs. a playlist: is there really a difference? There’s a huge one. A lot of people think DJing is just showing up with speakers and pressing play on a playlist. Honestly, that’s exactly what some DJs do. But a real DJ is doing far more behind the scenes than most people realize, and at a wedding, that’s the difference between a dance floor that builds all night and one that dies early.

What a real DJ is doing that you don’t see

I’m watching the crowd and reading the room in real time, all night long. Who’s dancing? Who’s leaving the floor? Which age group is reacting right now? Is the energy building or starting to dip? Do I stay in this genre a little longer or pivot into something else? Every one of those decisions matters.

Sometimes I’ll have the next three songs planned out in my head, then completely change direction because I notice the crowd reacting differently than I expected. A playlist will never do that.

What a playlist can’t do

  • Read body language. It has no idea who’s on the floor or who just sat down.
  • Notice when the bridesmaids are starting to lose energy and bring them right back.
  • Recognize that the older crowd is ready for a singalong moment, and give them one at the right time.
  • Save a dance floor when a song misses. A playlist just keeps going.
  • Handle the moments nobody planned for, like a toast that runs long or a timeline change at the last minute.
  • Introduce you, cue your first dance and keep the night moving. That takes a person at the mic who knows your plan.

Mixing is only part of it

Mixing songs together is only a small part of the job. The biggest skill is knowing how to control the energy of the room all night long without people even realizing you’re doing it.

That’s why two DJs can play a lot of the same songs, and one party feels unforgettable while the other feels awkward or dies early. Anybody can hit play. Keeping 200 people dancing for hours is a completely different skill set.

How I approach your dance floor

I am an Open Format DJ, which I think is the purest form of DJing. It means ditching the constraints of genre, tempo and key to chase those unpredictable moments where you give the crowd exactly what they didn’t even know they wanted. I mix every genre, style and decade together with creative, stylized transitions, and I love playing the unexpected track at the perfect time instead of the same old wedding top 50.

Before your wedding, I get to know the two of you and build a custom set around your likes and dislikes. On the night, I treat it like a live show, and I’m the conductor. You can get a feel for my style from the live videos on my Instagram.

Is a playlist ever enough?

For a small, casual get-together where nobody expects to dance, a playlist can work fine. But if dancing is a big part of your wedding, remember that the dance portion is the longest part of your night and the final impression your guests take home. That’s worth having someone who’s reading the room the whole time.
